Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks will meet in the 2009 NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago at 1PM. The game will be televised on NBC in US and CBC and RDS in Canada.
Please comeback later this afternoon to read my comments on the game. It should be an entertaining Original 6 game.
Update 1 Jan 2009 8:10 AM ET:
I learned that “Doc” Emrick will not be able to do NBC’s play-by-play of today’s game. Story here.

What a first period. Blackhawks lead 3-1 over the Red Wings. Some very good plays on the power play and at even strength give the Hawks the two goal lead. I thought the ice surface was playing slow for the players, but I believe that the players are playing with some caution. Yet, they appear to be having fun out there this afternoon.
Update 1 Jan 2008 3:10 PM ET:
Ouch. Blackhawks lose the lead in the game as the Red Wing brought their “A” game in the second period to take the lead, 4-3 after 2 periods. Pavel Datsyuk’s break away goal is the difference right now. It was surely a beauty of a shot. The final period should be interesting.
Update 1 Jan 2008 4:15 PM ET:
Well, the Red Wings win it, 6-4. The game shows that Chicago Blackhawks have made great improvements, but they will need to continue to improve to get over the tough hurdle in front of them, the Detroit Red Wings. I agree with the announcers today, if you want to win the Cup, one will have to go through Detroit. It was a great game and look forward to see the Classic next year.

Walter E Williams wrote an interesting piece called Teaching Economics at Townhall yesterday. Mr Williams provide some interesting tips for student to realize when their instructors and professors are proselytizing. If you are student returning to the classrooms this spring term, you should read this piece.
Mr Williams shares three examples in developing straight thinking in this piece:
- Subjective statements versus positive statements
- Dealing with terms of better, best, or worse
- Cause and effect fallacy
As I read it, I found that I agreed with Mr Williams on his goal for his students studying economic theory:
Personally, I want students to share my values that personal liberty, along with free markets, is morally superior to other forms of human organization. The most effective means to accomplish that goal is to give them the tools to be tough, rigorous, hard-minded thinkers and they will probably reach the same conclusions as I have.
I am certain that any student could apply it to other classes as well.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Gary Varvel continues to produce some good points in his political cartoons at the Indianapolis Star. But, he always comes up with one outside the political spectrum. In his attempt to draw a picture based upon the work of di Octavio Ocampo, he gives this year’s Christmas a glimpse at what is to come. Can you can see it?

Thanks Gary for great work.

Gary Varvel continues to produce some good points in his political cartoons at the Indianapolis Star. In fact several weeks ago, he drew this cartoon in regards to Madoff scandal which Walter E Williams mentioned on the Rush Limbaugh Show yesterday.

It would be nice if more Americans would realize this and get our representatives and senators to change it.
