Miami (OH) & Boston U. advance NCAA 2009 D1 Men’s Frozen Four

Well, I predicted that Miami (OH) and Boston University would advance to  NCAA 2009 Men Division I Frozen Four  this Saturday at Verizon Center in Washington DC.  Although I was only able to watch the first half of the Miami-Bemidji State game, all the scoring happened during a six minutes span in the second period which  gave Miami (OH)  the momentum to win the game.  The Boston-Vermont game was exciting.  After jumping to 2-0 in the first period, Vermont turn the game into a battle by tying the game at 2-2 and taking the leading several times in the final half of the game.  But, Boston U fought back to win it with over 5 minutes left in the game.  With the way the Boston U has been battling in all their games to the Frozen Four Final, so they have experience and ability to win the title this year.  But, Miami (OH) looks like they will Boston U yet another battle this Saturday.  Check out this stories for more details on the semi-finals:

Sunday NCAA Frozen Four Regional Finals

30 March 2008

Was going to report the final of the BC-Miami (OH) game, but the game is going in overtime, tied 3-3. BC played some great hockey in the 2nd period, scoring 3 goals in 1:58 to take the lead 3-2 after 2 periods. But, Miami (OH) scored the tying goal in the 3rd period. Has been a great game.

The North Dakota-Wisconsin game has just began. So, more updates later tonight.

Current brackets at ESPNU here.

Update 30 March 2008 7:36 PM ET

BC wins, 4-3. BC scores the winner in overtime on only their third shot 12:12 into the first overtime. Miami (OH) out played BC in the overtime period, but when BC took a timeout about half into overtime, this made the difference. It got the BC players back to playing hockey. A tough loss for Miami (OH) who are again denied a chance in the Frozen Four. BC is still undefeated when they score 4 goals and the their head coach wins for 801st time in his career. BC will play the winner of North Dakota-Wisconsin game.

I expected the North Dakota-Wisconsin game to be played just like the BC-Miami (OH) game. Hopefully, it will not go to overtime, too. :)

Update 30 March 2008 9:40 PM ET

Well, I should have expected it. North Dakota-Wisconsin will be going to overtime as well. North Dakota was being out played after 40 minutes of play and down 2-0, when within 47 seconds, they scored two goals and pulled even with Wisconsin at 2-2. It has been another entertaining hockey game. Hopefully, the game will be decided quickly in overtime.

Update 30 March 2008 9:56 PM ET

Yes! It is over. North Dakota scores the winning goal off the face off to win 3-2 over Wisconsin. North Dakota advances to the Frozen Four.

Updates on these games tomorrow.

NCAA Men Division I Frozen Four Brackets

23 March 2008

Well, the conference champions were crowned last night and today the NCAA announced the sixteen teams playing in 2008 Men Division I Frozen Four tournament. Air Force, Boston College, Denver, Michigan, Niagara, and Princeton received the automatic bids this year.

The top seeds for the regions in order of their overall seed are:

East: Michigan
Mideast: Miami (OH)
West: New Hampshire
Midwest: North Dakota

Check out the brackets at ESPNU here . The TV schedule is located here. The semis and championship game will be play in Denver, Colorado on April 10 and 12. The championship game will be broadcast at 7 PM on ESPN.

It appears that Michigan is favorite to win it. But, anything can happen in this tournament. Last year’s champion, Michigan State surprised everyone. Boston College is looking to get to the top again and win it. But, a bit of surprise in this year’s tournament is the Wisconsin team. With a losing record this year, I wonder why their conference rival, Minnesota State, was not invited instead. They had a better ranking and overall record. But, the committee must have had their reasons.

Update: 24 March 2008

I have seen a lot of action on this post. So, who do you think will win this year’s championship?

If you are registered, please provide your prediction.

Correction: Updated dates of semis and championship game from April 12 and 14 to April 10 and 12.
