2010 Calder Memorial Trophy Nominees

22 April 2010 Leave a comment

NHL announced the nominees for the  Calder Memorial Trophy for top rookie today.  They are Tyler Myers of Buffalo, Matt Duchene of Colorado, and Jimmy Howard of Detroit. Read the article for stats on this year’s nominees.

It will be a tough choice this year between Duchene and Howard.  Duchene is one of the reasons that Colorado returned to the playoffs for the first time in several years.  Howard has been a consistent goaltender in helping Detroit though a tough injury ridden season and lead them to their fifth straight 100 point season.  I have to take the goaltender, Howard.

The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards show on June 23 in Las Vegas.

Martin St. Louis of Tampa Bay and Pavel Datsyuk of Detroit are two of this year’s nominees for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. The other player announced was Brad Richards of the Dallas Stars.

Another repeat challenge by St Louis and Datsyuk.  But, Datsyuk has owned this trophy for the past four seasons.  Look likes it will be five.

Voting was conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season.  The winner is to be announced at the 2010 NHL Awards on June 23 in Las Vegas.

Pavel has been a consistent winner of the Selke and Lady Byng trophies.  There is no doubt is deserves this trophy this year again.

Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils), for the ninth time, along with Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes and Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres are this year’s Vezina Trophy nominees for best goaltender announced by the NHL on Monday.

All these goaltenders played well to earn their nominations.  Ryan Miller has been a consistent contributor and may well be the choice this year.  However, the dark horse of this group is Bryzagalov, who had a big impact on the Coyotes reaching the playoffs this year and second place finish in the Pacific Division.  Yet, Brodeur put up great numbers for a veteran goaltender.

I like Miller to win it.

The winner will be unveiled during the NHL awards show in Las Vegas on June 23.
