2011 Stanley Cup Conference Semi-Finals

The 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs start tomorrow.  NHL.com has the schedule posted here.  So, here are my picks for the conference semi-finals round:

Eastern Conference

In review of my picks in  the East, I had Washington winning their series in 6, but I was off on the Flyers-Sabers series which the Flyers won. With Bruins/Canadiens going seven, in the East I am -2 in the total number of games. I finished 2-2  in the East based upon results last night.

#1 vs. #5

Washington played well in their series against the Rangers and will favored to win this series. However, the Lightning proved that they are great defensive team in their series with Pens minus Sidney Crosby.  But, will the Lightning have enough in the tank after coming back from 3-1 deficit?  Capitals have played like a team all season and well rested.  This series will be challenging for these division rivals.  Capitals in 6.

#2 vs. #3

The Flyers played well in game 7 against the Sabers, but Buffalo lack luster start gave the Flyers the victory. So,  I got to question the Flyers goal tending and status of Chris Pronger in the next series. With these situation in flux, I still do not see how the Flyers will go far.  However, the Bruins did show some weakness in their series with Canadiens.  They have no power play goals which could be their Achilles heal in this second season.  Yet, this series should be another great one to watch.  Bruins are playing great even strength hockey and have the edge in goal tending which wins games during this time of the year.  Boston in 6.

Western Conference

In reviewing my Western picks, Vancouver won their series, 4-3, and their opponent, Nashville won their series, 4-2. San Jose won their series, 4-2, and will meet Detroit who won their series in a sweep, 4-0. Overall, I was 3-1 in West. In total games I was +1, I was under on Canucks-Hawks, and over on Red Wings-Coyotes and Sharks-Kings.

#1 vs. #5

Vancouver got over the hump by winning in 7 against the Blackhawks. They face another similar team in Nashville. The Predators are going into the second round for the first time.  Canucks will need to get back to playing high octane hockey otherwise the Predators could take a page out the Hawks playbook and play the Vancouver team to the limit, stealing the series.  Canucks will pull it out in 7.

#2 vs. #3

Another re-match from prior season where the Sharks won it. The Sharks looked a little shaky against the Kings at times, but managed to beat their Pacific rival. The Red Wings breezed into this match by sweeping the Coyotes. The only thing I see missing from the Red Wings is Henrik Zetterburg. The extra time may pay off for him and the team. His return could relieve pressure on their other top forward, Pavel Datsyuk, in this series. Sharks had Detroit’s number again in the regular season, 3-1. So this will be another good series to watch.  But, the Sharks take it again in 6.

Overall, I’m 5-3 with a -1 on total number of games.  Let the puck drop on the second round!
