2011 Jack Adams Nominees

3 May 2011 1 comment

Last week, the NHL announced the nominees for the Jack Adams Trophy as coach of the year.  They are Vancouver’s Alain Vigneault and Nashville’s Barry Trotz, and Pittsburgh’s Dan Bylsma.  NHL story is here.

All these coaches have taken their teams to new heights this year. But, Dan Bylsma will win this award due to the fact that he took a team, minus its two big superstars, to finish in a tie with Philadephia Flyer for the Atlantic Division.

The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on June 22. The ceremony will be broadcast by VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

2011 Norris Trophy Nominees

Last week, the NHL announced the nominees for the James Norris Memorial Trophy (best defenseman). They are Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom, Boston’s Zdeno Chara and Nashville’s Shea Weber.  NHL story is here.

No surprise to see Nicklas Lidstrom and Zdeno Chara on this list of finalist.  They are always deserving of this award.  But, the individual who has made impact like last year’s winner, Duncan Keith of Chicago, has been Shea Weber.   Weber has been one of the reasons the Predators are the second this year.  Although a long shot, I like Weber winning this year.

The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on June 22. The ceremony will be broadcast by VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

2011 Vezina Trophy Nominees

Last week, the NHL announced the nominees for the Vezina Trophy are Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, Pekka Rinne from the Nashville Predators and Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins.  NHL story is here.

All three goalie are deserving of this award.  Luongo lead the leagues in wins and few goals allowed by a team.  Rinne has been solid for the Predators all year in the first year out of the first round of the playoffs.  And Thomas has rebounded from a disappointing season to lead the league in goals against average and save percentage.  Those numbers will give Thomas his second Vezina in 3 years.

The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on June 22. The ceremony will be broadcast by VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

2011 General Manager of the Year Finalists

NHL announced Vancouver’s Mike Gillis, Tampa Bay’s Steve Yzerman and Nashville’s David Poile are the finalist for this year’s GM of Year Award.  NHL story is here.

This category seems to new to me, but it is not surprising to see who is on the list this year.  All three GMs have put together solid teams that are in the second round of the playoffs.  But, Steve Yzerman has put together a group of young and veteran players in his first year in Tampa to return the cup to a past champion.

The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on June 22. The ceremony will be broadcast by VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

2010 Adams Award Nominees

NHL.com announced the nominees for the Jack Adams Award.  The Jack Adams Award  is presented annually by the National Hockey League Broadcasters’ Association to “the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success.”  The winner is selected by a poll among members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association at the end of the regular season. This year all the finalists for first time nominees.  They are Joe Sacco of Colorado, Dave Tippett of Phoenix and Barry Trotz of Nashville.  Check out the NHL.com article for bios on this year’s nominees.

I have to say that Joe Sacco and Dave Tippett have done a great job to get their teams to the playoffs this year.  So, Mr Tippett would be my first choice.  On short notice and with little expectations, he guided this team to number 4 seed in the Western Conference.

The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards Show on June 23 in Las Vegas.
