Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on winning the 2016 Stanley Cup. The Penguins defeated San Jose Sharks last night in Game 6 of the series, 3-1 and winning the series 4-2. It is the fourth championship for the Penguins in the franchise history.  Congratulations to Sidney Crosby on winning the Conn Symthe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs.

At first, I felt that gave it to him out of popularity, but his contribution in the last game probably gave it to him.  I thought his teammates, Phil Kessel or Matt Murray, had far more contributions in leading the team to winning their fourth Cup.  But, it is not about the best player in all the series, but the one would made most impact in the final series.

So alas, I guess it is alright to touch the Prince of Wales trophy before the Finals.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on winning the Prince of Wales Trophy as Eastern Conference champions.  The Penguins defeated last year’s Eastern Conference champion, Tampa Bay Lightning, last night 2-1 and winning the series 4-3.  The Penguins will play the the Western Conference Champion, San Jose Sharks, next Monday in Pittsburgh.  Good luck to both teams.

2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Conference Finals

NHL announced the start of the Conference Finals. The game this Saturday are on NBCSN at 5 PM and NBC at 8 PM.   NHL.com provides the coverage of each series.

In reviewing my Conference Semis picks, I picked 2 of 4 series correctly.  So, overall it is a 8-4 record this year.  A total of 24 games were played this round as I had predicted 25.  Overall there has been 71 games played out of the 74 games predicted.

Here is an overview of the Conference Semis:

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa

Predicted: Pens in 6.

Actual: Pens in 5

Boston vs New York Rangers

Predicted: Ranges in 7.

Actual: Bruins in 5

Chicago vs Detroit

Predicted: Blackhawks in 6.

Actual: Blackhawks in 7.

Los Angeles vs San Jose

Predicted:  Sharks in 6.

Actual: Kings in 7.

Now for the Conference Finals.  It is interesting that last four teams remaining are all former champions of the past four Stanley Cups.  As stated on NHL.com, it is now a tournament of champions.  So which one of the teams will earn their second cup in last 4 years or less?

Pitttsbrugh vs Boston

In the East, it is difficult to pick a winner here.  Although the Pens swept the regular season series, this is meaningless right now.  Both teams have been playing well offensively in the playoffs.   However, Boston has faced more adversity than the Pens to this point.  I stated this fact based upon the young Bruin defense stepping up when key injuries happen to Boston veteran defensemen in the first round.  This may be an edge in this series for the Bruins, but may be an area to be exploited by the Pens if the Bruin veterans do not return to the lineup.  I see this series as a toss up, but will pick the Pens in 6.

Chicago vs Los Angeles

The best in the league faces the defending champions.  Both of these teams are going to be tired after facing a seven game series in the previous round.   So, I am surprised to see this series starting on Saturday with Game 2 on Sunday.    The team that starts well in the series should go to the Finals.  I like the Hawks in 6.

2013 Masterton Trophy Finalists

Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

NHL announced the finalists for the 2013 Bill Masterton Trophy. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected in a poll of all chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) at the end of the regular season.  This year’s finalists are Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Minnesota Wild goaltender Josh Harding and Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

This award is always difficult to pick since all these finalists deserve to win this award.  Crosby could have a chance to win three awards this year and become the third Penguin to win this award.  That would interesting to see happen, but I really think that McQuaid deserve this year’s award.  Getting back to just play and have fun is all about this award.

2013 Hart Trophy Finalists

Hart Memorial Trophy

NHL announced the finalists for 2013 Hart Trophyon Friday.  The Hart Trophy is awarded annually to the “player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team.”  This year’s finalists are  New York Islanders center John Tavares, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, and Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

The Hart Trophy is determined by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

Here is the second award Crosby and Ovechkin are battle for this year.  One of these two will win it.  As stated with Lindsay Trophy, my guess would be on Sidney Crosby.

2013 Lindsay Award Finalists

Hal Lindsay Award (formerly Lester B. Pearson Award)

NHL announced this past Thursday the finalists for the 2013 Ted Lindsay Award.  Lindsay Award, formerly named Lester B Pearson Award, is given annually to most outstanding player in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players’ Association. This year’s finalists are  Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington CapitalsAlex Ovechkin and Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

Crosby and Ovechkin are battle for several trophies this year.  One of these two will win it.  But, which one will likely sweep?  My guess would be on Sidney Crosby.

2013 Norris Trophy Finalists

James Norris Memorial Trophy

NHL announced the finalists for the 2013 Norris Trophy this past Tuesday. The Norris Trophy is awarded annually to the defenseman who shows the “greatest all-round ability” at the position, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season. This year’s finalists are Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins, P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens and Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

Interesting fact in the announcement is that all these defensemen are new finalists.  All three have had an impressive year.  I would believe that Kris Letang would be the likely winner this year.
