2013 Selke Trophy Finalists

Frank J Selke Trophy

NHL announced the finalists for the 2013 Selke Trophy.  The Frank J. Selke Trophy is award annually to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.  This year’s finalists are Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks.

The winner will be announced during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

This is another tough one to pick this year, because all the finalists have played well to earn this award.  However, I would like to see Toews win it this year.

26 April 2012 Leave a comment

NHL announced the 2012 Selke Trophy nominees on April 23.  The nominees are St. Louis BluesDavid Backes, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings.  Frank J. Selke Trophy is given “to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.” Read the story here.

All three players are the Selke types.  Datsyuk looks to win it for the fourth time after having string of Selke Trophies broken last year.  But, I favor Backes because his impact to help the Blues win the Central Division in the West.

The winner is will be announced at the 2012 NHL Awards Show, June 20 at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

2011 Frank J Selke Trophy Nominees

Last week, the NHL announced the nominees for the Frank J Selke Trophy as best defensive forward.  They are Pavel Datsyuk of Detroit Red WingsRyan Kesler of Vancouver Canucks and Jonathan Toews of Chicago Blackhawks.  NHL story is here.

No doubt that Pavel Datsyuk is one of the best two way players in the league.  He is also a four time winner of the Selke Trophy. However, Kesler and Toews have shown this year that are becoming their respective team’s best two way player.  If doubt, look at what they did in their playoff series.  They cancelled each out and this  I believe will allow Datsyuk will win his fifth Selke Trophy.

The 2011 NHL Awards will be held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on June 22. The ceremony will be broadcast by VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada.

NHL.com announced the 2009 Selke Trophy nominees for top defensive forward.  They are:

Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings
Ryan Kesler, Vancouver Canucks
Mike Richards, Philadelphia Flyers

Well, another group of hard working forwards who deserve this award.  Pavel Datysuk is the favorite in this category.  While Ryan Kesler and Mike Richards as detailed in the NHL story are the bruising and hitting type forwards, they are no where at the same level as Datysuk in skills to get the puck away from the opposing player.  This  skill will get Datysuk this award again for the second straight year.
